Biography at time of Harkness Fellowship: Richard Gleave, a 2007–08 Commonwealth Fund Harkness/Health Foundation Fellow in Health Care Policy and Practice, is Performance Director at the Department of Health in England, where he leads the performance management team responsible for the delivery of the key national performance priorities for the NHS. Previously, he was a hospital manager for 17 years; he held board director posts in Sunderland and Bristol and was the trust Chief Executive in Bath. He also held a joint appointment with the NHS and Newcastle University, where he led a range of teaching, research and consultancy projects in health care management. He holds a master's degree in health economics and management from Sheffield University, and a first class degree from Oxford University.
