In the fourth year of program activities, program director Judith Feder, Ph.D., and colleagues at the Institute for Health Care Research and Policy, Georgetown University, will analyze recently enacted changes to the Medicaid and Medicare programs and other developments likely to affect the accessibility and quality of long-term care for frail elderly Americans. The advisory committee, chaired by John W. Rowe, M.D., president and chief executive officer of the Mount Sinai-NYU Medical Center and Health System, will continue to serve both the Picker/Commonwealth Program on Long-Term Care for Frail Elders and the Program on Medicare's Future. In the next year, the program will analyze the use of home health care by the chronically ill and review the impact of nursing home costs on the financial well-being of the elderly. The baby boom generation's need for long-term care and the future availability of care will also be assessed.
