The substantial cost of prescription drugs shouldered by Medicare beneficiaries is the subject of renewed national attention. Through analysis of the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey, this project will produce much-needed data on the current extent of insurance coverage for prescription drugs, the magnitude of individual out-of-pocket expenses, and trends in spending and coverage in recent years. After identifying options for a potential Medicare drug benefit, project staff will assess the relative impact of each on beneficiaries and the Medicare program itself.
