Although choosing a physician is among the most important health care decisions one can make, rarely is it informed by objective data on quality. Attempts to fill this information void are hampered in part by a lack of knowledge about what patients actually want, need, and can understand. This project will summarize what is currently known about patients' preferences, conduct focus groups to determine information priorities, and ascertain the best means of communicating such information. The project team will also lay the groundwork for a set of physician quality measurements similar to those currently in use for managed care plans.
