In November 2000, Johns Hopkins University initiated design of a longitudinal follow-up study of Healthy Steps children to analyze the program's effects when they are between the ages of 5 and 5½. With development of the parent survey questionnaire now complete, the project team will initiate the interviews. Questions will focus on parents' knowledge of health promotion and developmental and behavioral issues, their child-rearing practices in this regard, and their experiences with pediatric care. More than 650 telephone interviews will be completed in the next year. Additional activities will include continuing efforts to track Healthy Steps families in the national evaluation and to maintain the Healthy Steps sample. Project findings will constitute an important contribution to scientific research into the effectiveness of parenting interventions that seek to promote not only the physical well-being of children, but their intellectual and emotional development as well.
