Addressing racial and ethnic disparities within the U.S. hospital system is critical to improving the health of underserved populations. For this project, the National Association of Public Hospitals (NAPH), which represents 100 of the largest safety net hospitals and health systems, will develop a consortium of up to 12 large public hospitals to improve care for patients with diabetes-a disease that disproportionately strikes minority Americans and the poor. Among other activities, project staff will survey 1,800 patients with diabetes to assess their health care experiences and needs, examine patient records to evaluate and compare the quality of diabetes care in different hospitals, and share information about current practices and promising interventions. NAPH staff will involve senior hospital officials, community members, and payers in this public health initiative.
