The U.S. health care system is not meeting the developmental and preventive health care needs of children, the expectations of parents, or professional standards. At the same time, making changes in the way child health care is provided sometimes is hindered by a hesitance to seek and apply new and creative ideas. Other nations with different medical traditions and organization of care can be valuable sources of alternative approaches to child health care in the United States. Building on an earlier international meeting that was supported by the Fund, this project will systematically identify effective approaches to preventive child health care and developmental services in 10 countries. The accumulated information will serve as the basis for practical recommendations of programs and practices that can be adapted for use in this country.
