Recent studies point to a gap between the kinds of preventive and developmental services parents want for their young children and the care they actually receive from pediatric practices. To highlight and quantify this gap, the Fund previously supported creation of the Promoting Healthy Development Survey (PHDS), a validated measure of care quality based on parents' reports. In a recent project, Christina Bethell developed a version of the PHDS that could be used to measure the quality of care at individual practices. The instrument was successfully pilot-tested at two practices in Vermont. The proposed project will test the revised PHDS in 10 additional practices to confirm the measure's psychometric properties and to establish norms against which practices can assess their performance—both of which are critical for national dissemination.
