The U.K. Health Care System
Who is covered?
Health care in England is provided to all residents through the National Health Service (NHS), including hospital and physician services and prescription drugs. The NHS is financed primarily through general taxation and requires very little patient cost-sharing (mainly for outpatient prescription drugs, dental care, and optometry care). About one of 10 residents has supplementary private insurance covering choice of specialist and faster access to elective surgery.
