On Wednesday, June 3, The Commonwealth Fund and Institute for Healthcare Improvement hosted a tweet chat to discuss new approaches to health care delivery that could lead to breakthroughs in performance and improved care, especially for those with complex needs and high costs.

The discussion was centered on the merits of several of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s new rules for health care posed in a recent Journal of the American Medical Association article. Particular attention was paid to the rules, "Make it easy," which is about reducing waste and eliminating low-value activities, and "Move knowledge, not people," which suggests exploiting all helpful capacities of the digital age, for example, by substituting cheaper and more convenient alternatives for visits and institutional stays. Meet people where they are—literally.

We were joined by Don Berwick, M.D., M.P.P., President Emeritus and Senior Fellow, Institute for Healthcare Improvement; Elliott S. Fisher, M.D., M.P.H., Director, Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice; and, Jenn Verma, Senior Director, The Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement.
