Research Associate for Policy and Research
The Commonwealth Fund

Sarah Berk is the research associate for policy and research at The Commonwealth Fund, supporting Eric Schneider, M.D., in his role as senior vice president for policy and research. In this new position, Ms. Berk provides writing, editing, and research assistance, as well as general administrative support. This two-person department adds value to the organization’s work in all of its core areas, including working with other Fund staff to develop the research design of grant proposals and future publications, as well as reviewing those proposals or publications. Ms. Berk supports Dr. Schneider as he participates in deliberations about the Fund’s strategic direction, leads initiatives that are critical to the mission of the Fund, and contributes to Fund publications and journal articles as coauthor or lead author.

Most recently, Ms. Berk worked as a program specialist for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) overseeing five grantees in the implementation of a CDC–funded grant to prevent Hepatitis C among medically underserved populations. Before joining the DOHMH Ms. Berk was a research consultant for Public Health Solutions, evaluating factors that contributed to or prevented client attrition within their Queens- and Brooklyn-based home visitation programs. In this capacity she contributed to the study design, conducted qualitative interviews, analyzed data collected, and presented study findings and recommendations. From July 2008 to July 2011, Ms. Berk worked as a program analyst for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Washington, D.C., implementing HIV/AIDS prevention programs among youth and vulnerable children. Ms. Berk holds a B.A. in International Relations from American University and an M.P.H. from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.
