Karl Lorenz

Karl Lorenz is a staff member of the Veterans Integrated Palliative Program and Division of Internal Medicine at the Department of VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VA GLAHS). He serves as faculty of the VA GLAHS palliative care clinical fellowship and Director of Palliative Care Core for the VA Center for the Study of Healthcare Provider Behavior. He is also adjunct affiliate staff at RAND Health and assistant professor of medicine at UCLA. Lorenz's work has focused on improving supportive care delivery in general clinical practice, oncology, and palliative care. His research has focused on pain and other routine symptom screening tools, evidence-based standards, and quality measurement. He is a recipient of the Young Investigator Award of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and was also awarded the Advanced Career Development Award of the United States Department of Veteran Affairs. Lorenz holds a medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and completed his training in general internal medicine at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. Project: Based at Cancer Australia in Canberra, Lorenz's project will examine quality improvement efforts around colorectal cancer care in Australia. Lorenz will conduct interviews with key informants to map out current quality improvement efforts, identify major themes related to incentives and disincentives for quality improvement and performance measurement at each level of the healthcare system, and consider the implications of these themes for policy instruments to advance the assessment and improvement of colorectal cancer.
