Biography at time of fellowship: Raj Srivastava, M.D., M.P.H, a 2013-14 Australian-American Health Policy Fellow, is associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Utah. He is also a practicing hospitalist at the Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City and a Fellow of the Institute of Health Care Delivery Research at Intermountain Health Care where he has been researching how to measure and improve pediatric inpatient quality of care. Srivastava also chairs the only funded hospitalist network, Pediatric Research in Inpatient Settings (PRIS), which has conducted several large studies examining topics such as hospital variation in cost per admission, building data infrastructure for comparative effectiveness research, performing pediatric CER studies, and studying system-level interventions using quality improvement methods to improve patient safety. Srivastava has published over 50 peer-reviewed publications in journals such as BMJ and Pediatrics. He received his M.D. from the University of Toronto and his M.P.H. from the Harvard School of Public Health.
Project: Raj is based at the Independent Hospital Pricing Authority in Sydney – which is setting the costs and national efficient price for the Australian health care reform. His project focuses on understanding the differences in costing models for adult and pediatric care and seeing if the Australian models should account for children with chronic illnesses. The overall purpose of the work will be to partner with the Independent Hospital Pricing Authority and other relevant stakeholders (including hospital administrators and clinical leaders from paediatric specialty hospitals and health policy experts) to further develop the specialist paediatric adjustment that is currently being used for the paediatric pricing for hospital based care in Australia. We will help answer the following questions; Should the costing models used in Australia health care reform account for children with medical complexity? How well does the current costing model account for adults with chronic conditions compared to paediatric care?
Current Update: Upon returning, Srivastava was offered and accepted a new position Assistant Vice President of Research at Intermountain Healthcare. His experiences from Australia at the federal and state level are being put to excellent use - as Intermountain embarks on this new application-based research journey.
