Dr. Valadez is responsible for the quality of care of all clinical programs throughout Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department (ATCHHSD), as well as for developing the department's quality assurance programs. He also serves as the health authority for Austin/Travis County. Dr. Valadez previously served as an Instructor in Clinical Medicine at the Harvard Medical School and on peer review committees for the HRSA Centers of Excellence grants, as a member of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Expert Panel on Physical Activity and Nutrition and a Special Emphasis Panel on community-based participatory research methodologies. Dr. Valadez has been principal investigator to the CDC program entitled, Steps to a Healthier US, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) program, InformationLinks: Linking Public Health to Health Information Exchanges, and the follow-up RWJF grant, Common Ground.

Dr. Valadez received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and completed a residency in internal medicine at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA, before completing the CFHU Fellowship and receiving an M.P.H. from the Harvard School of Public Health.
