Dora Hughes, M.D.

Dora Hughes, M.D., M.P.H., is associate research professor of Health Policy and Management at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University. Her work focuses on the intersection of clinical and community health, social determinants of health, health equity, health care quality and workforce. Previously, Dr. Hughes was a senior policy advisor at Sidley Austin, where she advised on regulatory and legislative matters in the life science industry. Prior to that, she served for nearly four years in the Obama administration as counselor for science and public health to Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at the Department of Health and Human Services. Previously, she served as health and education advisor to then-Senator Barack Obama and, before that, as deputy director for health for Senator Edward M. Kennedy on the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. Prior to working on Capitol Hill, Dr. Hughes served as senior program officer at the Commonwealth Fund. Dr. Hughes completed medical school at Vanderbilt University and residency at Brigham & Women's Hospital. As a Commonwealth Fund Fellow in Minority Health Policy, she completed her M.P.H. at the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Hughes is board-certified in internal medicine.
