Mentors: Ricardo Muñoz, Ph.D., Bernard Lo, M.D., and Michael von Korff, Sc.D.

Placement: University of California, San Francisco

Biography at time of Harkness Fellowship: Hedda Van’t Land, Ph.D, a 2009–10 Commonwealth Fund Harkness Fellow in Health Care Policy and Practice, is a psychologist and methodologist and currently serves as research director of the division national monitor of mental health for The Netherlands Institute of Mental Health and Addiction. In this position, she is responsible for reporting to the Dutch parliament on the quality and effectiveness of mental health care services, including on access, patient-centeredness, and disparities. Previously, she conducted research at the Autónoma University in Madrid, and served as expertise manager at the department of applied market research of KPN Research (KPN Telecom). Van 't Land’s research focuses on access to and quality of mental health services, minority/diversity research, and development and validation of instruments in cross-cultural research. She has written numerous peer-reviewed policy-related reports and articles, including in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research, and received awards from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education. She received her Ph.D. in 2000 from the VU University in Amsterdam for her dissertation, "Effects of Cultural Background on Validity of Questionnaires," and her M.Sc. with honors in psychology from the University of Amsterdam.

Project: Van ‘t Land assessed the potential of Internet interventions for reducing mental health care disparities among Latinos, and identified key barriers and facilitators to integrating Internet interventions in clinical practice. She began with a comprehensive literature review and a series of interviews with local, state, and national U.S. policymakers in this field, followed by a web-based survey of policymakers and experts.
