Placement: Yale School of Public Health

Biography at time of Harkness Fellowship: Jan Frich, M.D., Ph.D., M.H.A., M.Sc., a 2013-14 Norwegian Harkness Fellow in Health Care Policy and Practice, is a professor of health services research and medicine at the Institute of Health and Society at the University of Oslo, where he is also academic director of the executive master’s program in health administration.  He is also as an attending neurologist at the Oslo University Hospital. Frich’s academic interests include clinical leadership, health care work force, patient experience, and quality of care. He is the recipient of many grants, including the Leadership Grant from the Norwegian Medical Association (2006), and currently leads a grant to develop e-learning resources in clinical leadership/team work. Frich has over 25 peer-reviewed publications, including in International Journal of Healthcare Management, and BMC Public Health, is author of 15 book chapters, and editor to three books – topics include quality of care, clinical leadership, and medical education. Frich holds a master’s in science from Brunel University in London and an M.D., Ph.D., and M.H.A. from the University of Oslo.

Project: Frich’s project aims to study and develop models for developing clinical leaders within U.S. health care institutions, particularly accountable care organizations (ACOs). He will first conduct a literature review and expert interviews focusing on leadership development and the core competencies for clinical leaders. He will then perform at least three case studies at high-performing health systems – likely including ACOs – on their policies and practices for leadership development. These will include interviews, document review, and observations.
