The Healthy Steps for Young Children Program Support for Program Direction and Operations, 1999–2000

The Healthy Steps for Young Children Program has been the Fund's most successful effort at attracting cofunding, with $24 million invested by more than 70 national and local funders. The Healthy Steps approach, which seeks to maximize the healthy development of children age 3 and younger, has been implemented in 24 practices across the country, and more than 150 clinicians have been trained to carry out program services. The goals of the program are to promote the knowledge, skills, and confidence of parents by expanding the capacity of pediatric primary care to provide child development services. Practitioners outside the original Fund-supported 24 sites have also begun adopting elements of the approach, and several teaching hospitals have integrated it into their pediatric residency training programs. This phase of the project will be cofunded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and interested givers.
