Assessing Academic Health Centers' Financial Status and Ability to Support Their Missions

This is a time of acute financial stress for many of the nation's academic health centers, with many facing reduced revenues, rising costs, and intense competition. For this project, analysts at the Lewin Group will evaluate the financial condition of these vital institutions and their ability to fulfill their medical education, research, specialty care, and indigent care missions. Project staff will also assess the potential impact of reforms proposed by the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission and produce more detailed cost estimates for each AHC mission. Results will inform the Fund's Task Force on Academic Health Centers, institutional leaders, and policymakers in devising solutions.
