The Commonwealth Fund Task Force on Academic Health Centers: Support for Program Direction and Analysis, 2000-01

×

Rapid change in the financing and delivery of health care is forcing the nation's academic health centers (AHCs)-a cornerstone of the U.S. health system-to undertake dramatic reforms to sustain and promote their traditional missions of education, research, and patient care. The Commonwealth Fund Task Force on Academic Health Centers has made significant contributions to the nation's understanding of the challenges facing AHCs as they struggle to fulfill these missions. In the year ahead, the Task Force will continue to track and report on institutional responses to heightened market competition for AHC leaders and policy experts. It will also monitor the financial status of AHCs, generate new information on how financial stringency is affecting AHC missions, and formulate public policy recommendations. Project results will help AHCs develop strategies to protect mission-related activities and will inform those in a position to effect national change.
