The Healthy Steps for Young Children Program: Support for Program Direction and Operations, 2000-01

The Healthy Steps program was launched in 1994 to help pediatric practices provide mothers and fathers with the tools and information they need to nurture their young children's healthy development. Since its inception, more than 6,400 infants and toddlers have received Healthy Steps services. Many practices and health systems are developing plans to sustain or expand their capacity to provide Healthy Steps, while a number of new practices and residency training programs are planning to implement the program for the first time. Over the coming year, ICF Incorporated will work to lay the infrastructure for diffusion of Healthy Steps. Activities will include identifying reimbursement options for Healthy Steps services, lending support for additional efforts to incorporate the approach into medical education, and providing pediatric practices with technical assistance. ICF will also maintain oversight over the national evaluation and continue to assist in program coordination. This phase of the project is cofunded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and interested givers.
