Staffing Requirements to Implement Feeding Assistance in Nursing Homes

An alarming number of nursing homes residents are undernourished, and there is strong evidence that inadequate staffing and feeding assistance are the main reasons. This project will develop protocols that permit nursing home staff to identify at-risk residents who are likely to respond to special feeding assistance. Using computer simulation technology, the project will then determine the most effective and efficient deployment of staff resources to provide this crucial assistance. The interventions and staffing models developed will help nursing home administrators throughout the nation design optimal mealtime staffing plans and improve residents' nutrition and health.
