Evaluating Patients' Experience with Care Received from Primary Care Physicians: A Demonstration Project

Consumers want reliable, accessible information about the quality of individual physicians practicing in their area, but such data are now relatively scarce. This project will conduct a statewide survey of patients to find out about the care they have received from doctors-and to determine whether such a survey is a feasible way to gather this information. To be adapted from and integrated with the current version of the Consumer Assessment of Health Plans Survey (CAHPS), the questionnaire will ask a sample of 45,000 patients about the care received from 200 primary care physicians across all the major health plans in Massachusetts. The information collected will be analyzed and released to participating health plan medical groups. If this performance measurement model can be feasibly deployed, it may have national applicability for assessing patient experiences with physician care at the health plan, integrated network, group practice, and individual physician levels.
