Academic Health Leaders' Campaign to Cover the Uninsured

Academic health centers comprise only 6 percent of U.S. hospitals but treat nearly 50 percent of the uninsured. Despite their substantial and critical involvement in caring for the uninsured, few leaders in this field have used their unique positions and expertise to press for coverage for the uninsured. In February 2002, the Association of Academic Health Centers (AHC) launched a mobilization effort called 'Why Not Everyone? It's Time for Action on the Uninsured.' The campaign is intended to make coverage of the uninsured a national priority by enlisting help from academic and other health care leaders to convene, educate, and mobilize their communities. AHC has recruited university leaders as well, who are instrumental in articulating the critical issues facing the country. Last year, AHC produced and disseminated information at 16 local meetings around the country of providers, academics, policymakers, and students. This grant supports a second year of the initiative.
