Managing Hospital Patient Safety: An Interactive System

When communication problems affected the safety of air travel, the airline industry responded by designing crew resource management (CRM) techniques, which have since reduced potentially fatal errors caused by miscommunication among crew members. Knowing that communication failures are also the root cause of numerous medical errors, a team at Atlantic Health System in New Jersey will incorporate CRM principles in an interactive, CD-ROM-based 'safe practice learning center' to improve hospital patient safety. The learning center will include a simulation-based competency testing module that hospitals could use to certify clinicians and managers in safety practices. An 'operations control center,' meanwhile, will provide hospital personnel with immediate information so they could properly react to critical variables that affect patient care and safety.
