Financial Status of Academic Health Centers and Their Provision of Uncompensated Care, Phase Three

×

Changes in health care financing continue to place stress on many of our nation's academic health centers (AHCs). Reduced revenues, rising costs, and intense competition affect the ability of AHCs to perform their costly social missions. As a follow-up to two prior projects, the Lewin Group will update information on the financial health of these institutions and their ability to train doctors and conduct research, provide sophisticated treatments, and supply indigent patients with free care. The Lewin Group will undertake two additional studies: an analysis of the impact of health care market changes on the financial solvency of AHCs, and an analysis of market factors that influence levels of uncompensated care at these institutions. This work will assist hospital executives and policymakers in their efforts to restore financial stability to AHCs.
