Assessing the Role of the Physician in Child Health Disparities

Studies of racial and ethnic disparities in health and health care have largely centered on adult patients. The project, an extension of a larger government-funded study of physician behavior and clinical discretion, will explore the impact of children's race and ethnicity on the clinical decisions made by physicians. A four-state survey of pediatricians and family practitioners will help uncover the underlying reasons for these differences in care. Project staff will convene a national conference to discuss study results and identify areas where actions to eliminate disparities could be directed. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the California Endowment will provide cofunding for this project.
