International Working Group on Quality Indicators, Phase Three

The International Working Group on Quality Indicators, initially convened by the Fund in March 1999, aims to improve the measures available for cross-national comparisons of health care quality. To date, the work of this group has focused on developing recommendations for a minimum set of quality indicators to be collected in the International Program's five core countries-Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States-with a report to health ministers anticipated in early 2003. Two additional meetings will be held in January and June 2003 to address operational issues of data collection and implementation in the five countries and expand the core set of indicators. Participation in the meetings by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has led to a Fund collaboration with that body beginning in 2003 to expand to 17 the number of industrialized countries from which quality data are collected.
