Developing Better Evidence for Medical Decision-Making: Policy Context

×

Critical to improving the performance of the health care system in the United States is better medical decision-making, and critical to improving medical decision-making is reliable information about the benefits, risks, and costs of new medical treatments, procedures, and technologies. Two experts will address this need from different directions. Sean Tunis, M.D., M.Sc., will develop a framework for understanding the gaps in evidence and for improving the identification, generation, dissemination, and application of better evidence for coverage, payment, and clinical decision-making. Meanwhile, Gail Wilensky, Ph.D., will examine the policy context in which the establishment of such a mechanism would be considered. The products—two policy papers—will guide the development of initiatives to improve the decisions made by health care payers and practitioners, while also providing a basis for further work.
