Advancing Accountable Care Organizations in Medicaid

The Affordable Care Act’s expansion of Medicaid eligibility in 2014 to almost 20 million additional low-income Americans presents an opportunity for new accountable care organizations (ACOs) serving Medicaid patients to transform the way care is delivered to vulnerable populations. Since late 2011, the Center for Health Care Strategies (CHCS) has been examining state Medicaid ACO efforts and convening state and federal officials, health plans, and providers to identify needs for technical assistance and state peer-to-peer learning. The Commonwealth Fund supported CHCS to develop a curriculum for, and implement the early stages of, a multistate Medicaid ACO learning collaborative. Building on that work, this grant will support a one-year learning collaborative designed to: 1) help six state Medicaid agencies develop and implement ACO programs; and 2) disseminate early lessons and best practices.
