Harkness Fellowships in Health Care Policy and Practice, 2017–18

Since 1998, the Harkness Fellowships in Health Care Policy and Practice have produced an international cadre of more than 200 health care leaders whose work makes ongoing contributions to the Fund’s thinking and to U.S. policy debate. With partner cofunding, the Harkness Fellowships have expanded beyond a core group of English-speaking countries—Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom—to include Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Canada, and France. Once back home, fellows function as an on-the-ground network of international experts on whom the Fund can draw for advice and insight. Many collaborate with the Fund as invited speakers, commissioned authors, or grantees. This authorization will support the recruitment, selection, and U.S. tenure of Harkness Fellows from up to nine countries. Candidates will include promising mid-career professionals, including policymakers, researchers, and clinical leaders. Those selected will spend 12 months working with leading U.S. experts to study health care delivery reforms and critical policy issues in both the U.S. and fellows’ home countries.
