Commonwealth Fund Mongan Fellowship in Minority Health Policy: Support for Program Direction and Fellowships, 2017–18

Since 1996, The Commonwealth Fund Mongan Fellowship in Minority Health Policy has developed a network of physician-leaders dedicated to transforming care delivery and promoting policies and practices to improve access to high-quality care for vulnerable populations, including racial and ethnic minorities and economically disadvantaged groups. By the end of this program year, a total of 129 physicians, dentists, and other health professionals will have received an M.P.H. or M.P.A. and intensive training in leadership and health policy. Harvard staff led by Joan Reede continue to seek ways to increase the value of fellowship, most recently by strengthening the delivery system leadership training provided to fellows. The current grant will support at least three fellows for 2017–18. To support the long-term sustainability of the program, the Harvard team will seek cofunding for two additional physician fellows for that year. The team will also implement strategies to improve career transitions for fellows and improve coordination with the Fund’s Harkness Fellowship program. New graduates of the program are expected to play important roles in developing and implementing health care policies and initiatives to improve care for minority and disadvantaged populations.
