Commonwealth Fund Mongan Fellowship in Minority Health Policy: Support for Program Direction and Fellowships, 2018–19

Since 1996, The Commonwealth Fund Mongan Fellowship in Minority Health Policy has developed a network of physician leaders dedicated to transforming care delivery and promoting policies and practices to improve access to high-quality care for vulnerable populations, including racial and ethnic minorities and economically disadvantaged groups. By the end of this program year, 133 physicians, dentists, and other health professionals will have graduated from the program. Based at Harvard Medical School, the yearlong fellowship offers intensive study in health policy, public health, and management. Fellows complete academic work leading to a master of public health degree at the Harvard School of Public Health or a master of public administration degree at the Harvard Kennedy School. Fellows also participate in leadership forums and seminars. An assessment and strategic planning process conducted in 2016 revealed that the fellowship has been successful in creating a network of highly committed minority leaders. The review also identified room for improvement in the areas of skills-based training, support for fellows' career transitions, leveraging the alumni network, and securing more financial participation from the host university. The current grant will support at least three fellows for 2018-19. Cofunding is being sought to support additional fellows. Graduates of the program are expected to play important roles in developing and implementing health care policies and initiatives to improve care for minority and disadvantaged populations.
