Frans F.H. Rutten, Ph.D., is professor of health economics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, where he founded the associated institute for Medical Technology Assessment in 1988 and was managing director from 1988 to 2000. He also chairs the Institute of Health Policy and Management. His research interests include the methodology and application of economic evaluation of health care programs and medicines, equity issues in health care, and international comparison of health care systems. He chaired the organizing committee of the second international Health Economics Association (iHEA) World Conference on Health Economics in 1999 and was iHEA president in 2001–02.
