Kathleen Jennison Goonan

Director, MGH Center for Performance Excellence

Kathleen Jennison Goonan, M.D., is director of the MGH Center for Performance Excellence (MGH CPE), a consulting practice based at the Institute for Healthcare Policy, Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She leads the MGH CPE team of Baldrige and Six Sigma experts in their work with client organization, which includes customized leadership development programs based upon approaches used by Baldrige Award recipients. Other services include facilitating Baldrige-based self assessments to accelerate transformational change from good to great performance.

Dr. Goonan has 20 years physician executive and 12 years internal medicine clinical practice experience. She worked as a senior executive in a wide diversity of hospitals and medical groups in Massachusetts as well as teaching and coaching others throughout the United States pursuing organizational performance excellence. She served as a member of the Panel of Judges for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, appointed by the Secretary of Commerce of the United States (1999–2002). She teaches in the Harvard School of Public Health Leadership Development Program for Physicians from academic health centers, Intermountain Health Care's Advanced Training Program, and has been a faculty member for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement since it was founded in 1988.
