New Initiatives in Mental Health Reform

Several consumer-centered mental health initiatives were recently announced as part of the government's $2.2 billion mental health reform package. Such initiatives include the launch of 15 new "headspace" mental health sites to support young people with depression, substance abuse, and other mental health issues, with an additional 90 sites soon to come. Young people will also soon benefit from new mental health centers across Australia intended to help youth experiencing early psychosis. The government is also providing funding to extend mental health crisis response aid, including a 24-hour walk-in service along with in-home assessments. Additionally, the federal government recently established a $550 million mental health program called Partners in Recovery designed to provide coordinated support and flexible funding for people with severe and ongoing mental illness and complex support needs.
