Dutch Health Insurers to No Longer Pay for Expensive Medicines That Don't Cure Patients

The Dutch health minister has announced that health insurers will only pay for medicines that have a measurable effect on the patient. The principle known as "no cure, no pay" was supported by the country's health insurance council. An asthma medication that is only effective in seven out of 10 patients will be the first medicine that is tested under this principle. For patients who go on the treatment but show no improvement, the cost of the drug will be returned to the insurer by the drug manufacturer. The health insurance council also advised the minister to no longer pay for expensive treatments for rare diseases, a measure which the health ministers not named before this reference will not put into effect.
