Reduced Drug Spending in the Netherlands

Pharmacies in the Netherlands are expected to dispense €4.5 billion worth of drugs this year, down from €5 billion last year. Over the past 12 years, spending on drugs has steadily dropped in the country, largely because of national efforts to use more generics, remove certain drugs from the basic health insurance coverage formulary, and have hospitals directly issue the most expensive drugs.
