Mortality Amenable to Health Care: Demographics and Health System Performance

In a study published in the Journal of Public Health Policy (Aug. 25, 2011), former Commonwealth Fund executive vice president Stephen Schoenbaum, M.D., senior vice president Cathy Schoen, and colleagues examined U.S. rates of "mortality amenable to health care," a statistic used to measure deaths before age 75 that are potentially preventable with timely and effective health care. The authors find that variations in amenable mortality from region to region are associated with demographic factors like poverty and race, as well as indicators of health system performance such as hospital readmission rates and the quality of chronic disease care.
