Moving Toward Accountable Care in the U.S. and U.K.

In a blog post published on the U.K.'s Nuffield Trust site, The Commonwealth Fund's Mark Zezza, Ph.D., considers the potential of accountable care organizations (ACOs) and their similarities with efforts in the U.K. to create "clinical commissioning groups." "Accountable care organizations are certainly not a sure fix to the problems in the United States health care system," he writes. "It would likely take years and many modifications from lessons learned to foster the type of change that can permanently bend the cost curve. Given that similar issues are being faced by the NHS, ideally that process can be accelerated by sharing lessons learned across health systems on both sides of the Atlantic."
