Identifying Meaningful Outcome Measures for ICUs

As part of a Commonwealth Fund–supported study, researchers surveyed nearly 200 physicians about their views on nine outcome measures proposed for evaluating the quality and safety of care provided in hospital intensive care units (ICUs). The results, which appear in the American Journal of Medical Quality, show consensus on the reliability of five measures. The study was led by Elizabeth A. Martinez, M.D., a specialist in critical care medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, who died of a rare cancer on September 19, 2013. Her department at Mass General announced that it will establish the Elizabeth Martinez Endowed Chair in Quality and Safety to ensure that her work continues.
