Provider Participation in Pay-for-Value Programs: Impact on High-Need Patients

High-need patients with multiple chronic conditions account for a disproportionate share of health spending. In a Commonwealth Fund–supported study (American Journal of Managed Care, Feb. 2017), researchers led by the University of Michigan’s Dori A. Cross explored whether these patients used fewer health services and received higher-quality care if their primary care providers participated in a program that used financial incentives to foster delivery of effective, high-value care.
