Millions of Americans Could Face Premium Surcharge Under ACA Repeal Bill

The American Health Care Act proposes to replace the ACA’s requirement for individuals to have health insurance or face a tax penalty with a requirement to maintain continuous coverage or pay a one-year penalty equal to 30 percent of their premium. As the Commonwealth Fund’s Sara Collins and Munira Gunja explain, an estimated 30 million working-age adults might have faced a premium surcharge if such a policy had been in effect last year.
