Samuel C. Fleming Elected To Commonwealth Fund Board Of Directors

New York City, January 2nd, 2003—The Commonwealth Fund today announced the election of Samuel C. Fleming to its board of directors. Fleming is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Decision Resources, Inc., which is best known for its therapeutically-focused analyses of global pharmaceutical and biotechnology markets and, through its InterStudy subsidiary, for its research on the U.S. managed health care industry. Each year, about 1,000 clients utilize Decision Resources' services in their decision-making process. "We are very pleased to welcome Samuel Fleming to the board of The Commonwealth Fund. Mr. Fleming brings to the Fund a wealth of experience in health care management and analysis," said Dr. Samuel O. Thier, chairman of the Fund's board of directors. "His broad scope of knowledge about health and health care issues will be a tremendous addition to our deliberations." Earlier, Mr. Fleming was a senior vice president and a member of the management group of Arthur D. Little, Inc. where he was a strategic consultant for clients in the health care and chemical industries and founding president of Arthur D. Little Decision Resources. He led the buyout of Decision Resources, Inc. from Arthur D. Little, Inc., in 1990. For many years, Mr. Fleming has been actively involved with leading education and health care institutions. Currently he is a Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Cornell University and a Director of CareGroup, Inc., a health network that includes the Harvard Medical School-affiliated Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center and the New England Baptist Hospital, where Mr. Fleming was Chairman of the Board. He serves as a Director of The Picker Institute, which focuses on improving health care quality from the patient's perspective. "Samuel Fleming's expertise in health care quality analysis and measurement will be invaluable to fulfilling the Fund's mission of improving health care quality and access to health care," said Karen Davis, president of The Commonwealth Fund. Mr. Fleming received a BChE from Cornell University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He and his wife, Nancy, a landscape designer and author, have two grown sons and reside in Weston, MA.
