Choosing Nursing Homes as Clinical Placement Sites: Six Educational Modules

Overview

This set of six online modules aims to help nursing faculty base their selection of nursing home sites for undergraduate student practicum placement on a rigorous assessment of facility performance, with a special focus on nursing homes involved in resident-directed care and culture change.

The Issue

In 2008, Mathy Mezey, Ed.D., R.N., F.A.A.N., of New York University brought together leaders in both academic gerontologic nursing and culture change to build a common understanding of the role of nurses in promoting culture change within long-term care. An unanticipated outcome of this collaboration was a request from the group for a set of recommendations for academic training programs on how to use the nursing home component of nurse training to introduce and inculcate in students the principles of resident-directed care.

That suggestion resulted in the creation of educational modules developed by the Hartford Institute and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, with support from The Commonwealth Fund.

Target Audience

Nursing faculty

The Intervention

These six modules will help faculty select and use nursing homes for student clinical placement. Through a good nursing home placement, students can gain exposure to exemplary models of care and begin to develop the manual, verbal, and clinical skills required to provide effective care. Such placements can also help students develop geriatric nursing competencies, interdisciplinary competencies, and competencies in assessment.

The six modules are:

  • Module 1: An overview of nursing homes
  • Module 2: An overview of nursing in nursing homes
  • Module 3: Content on resident-directed care and culture change
  • Module 4: Selecting and structuring clinical placements in nursing homes
  • Module 5: A case study to help faculty introduce the principles and practices of resident-directed care and culture change
  • Module 6: Strategies to help nursing homes position themselves for clinical placements
