Household Matters

Household Matters: A Good Life 'Round the Clock is an integrated toolkit of manuals, guides, and other materials written specifically for long-term care providers wanting to shed their traditional institutional orientation and find out how to become resident-centered.

The toolkit was created by Steve Shields, the CEO of Meadowlark Hills, a retirement community in Manhattan, Kansas, along with a team of experts in deep system change, regulatory compliance, and human resource management. Funding for the toolbox was provided by The Commonwealth Fund, the Sunflower Foundation, and the Kansas Department on Aging.

The toolkit components provide an explicit, code-compliant roadmap for how an organization can shape itself to become a resident-directed service model with a well-trained, fully empowered, workforce. This packaged toolbox will not only assist providers with the difficult process of change management as they work to put the principles of resident-centered care into practice, but help to ensure sustainability long thereafter.

Each toolkit contains:

  • In Pursuit of the Sunbeam, a book by Steve Shields and LaVrene Norton
  • Living and Working in Harmony, A Training Guide for Self-Led Teams, a 100+ page training guide
  • Three CDs addressing:
    • Policies and Procedures—includes 355 procedures
    • Quality Indicators—covers auditing tools, household practices, guidelines, and QI procedures
    • Human Resources—includes an integrated system of household-specific job descriptions, orientation, in-services, and performance tools
  • 3 DVDs, including:
    • Living & Working in Harmony
