A May 22, 2017 Commonwealth Fund webinar explored how accountable care contracts and other value-based payment approaches are strengthening rural hospitals and enabling innovation.

The webinar built on our most recent issue of Transforming Care, “Reimagining Rural Health Care,” which examined how rural providers are adopting new care delivery and payment models to meet the unique health challenges rural areas face. Presenters shared how the strategies they’ve employed to address longstanding workforce shortages and population health needs may benefit urban populations as well.

The discussion was moderated by The Commonwealth Fund’s Melinda Abrams, Vice President for Delivery System Reform.

Presenters included:

  • Brock Slabach, Senior Vice President for Member Services at the National Rural Health Association
  • Lynn Barr, CEO of Caravan Health, a population management services company that supports rural hospitals making the transition to value-based payment
  • Tim Putnam, President and CEO of Margaret Mary Health, a critical access hospital in Batesville, Ind., that is part of an accountable care organization sponsored by Suburban Health
  • Lee McCall, CEO of Mississippi's Neshoba County General Hospital, a 200-bed hospital that includes outpatient clinics and a skilled nursing facility. The hospital is part of the Magnolia-Evergreen accountable care organization, which includes seven other rural hospitals from Mississippi and Washington State.
