Commission on a High Performance Health System Update
<p>Today the Commonwealth Fund's Commission on a High Performance Health System welcomes three new members: John M. Colmers, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; Martín-J. Sepúlveda, M.D., F.A.C.P., an IBM Fellow and Vice President of Integrated Health Services for the IBM Corporation; and David A. Share, M.D., M.P.H., Executive Medical Director of Health Care Quality at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. The Commonwealth Fund is also pleased to announce that Stuart Guterman has been appointed Executive Director of the Commission on a High Performance Health System, succeeding Stephen C. Schoenbaum, M.D., M.P.H.</p>
<p>Leaving the commission after five years of distinguished service are: Fernando A. Guerra, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.A.P., Robert M. Hayes, J.D., Sheila T. Leatherman, and Sandra Shewry, M.P.H., M.S.W. </p>
<p>The Commission on a High Performance Health System is a distinguished group of experts and leaders charged with promoting a high-performing health system that provides all Americans with affordable access to high-quality, safe care while maximizing efficiency in its delivery and administration. With its national and state scorecards, the commission has highlighted areas where health system performance falls short of what is achievable. The group has also issued a number of policy reports with practical recommendations, such as <a href="/publications/fund-reports/2008/aug/organizing-us-health-care-delivery-system-high-performance">Organizing the U.S. Health Care Delivery System for High Performance</a>, <a href="/publications/fund-reports/2007/dec/bending-curve-options-achieving-savings-and-improving-value-us">Bending the Curve: Options for Achieving Savings and Improving Value in U.S. Health Spending</a>, and <a href="/publications/fund-reports/2009/feb/path-high-performance-us-health-system-2020-vision-and-policies">The Path to a High Performance U.S. Health System: A 2020 Vision and the Policies to Pave the Way</a>.</p>
<p>Mr. Guterman will continue to serve as vice president for the Fund's Program on Payment and System Reform. Prior to joining the Fund as director of the Program on Medicare's Future, Mr. Guterman was director of the Office of Research, Development, and Information at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a senior analyst at the Congressional Budget Office, a principal research associate in the health policy center at the Urban Institute, and deputy director of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission. </p>
<p>"We are grateful for the many contributions of the departing members of the commission and for five years of leadership from Stephen Schoenbaum, and delighted to be joined by the new members and Stuart Guterman, who has already played a key role in many commission reports," said commission chair James J. Mongan, M.D., Professor of Health Care Policy and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. </p>
