David Barton Smith, Ph.D., received his doctoral degree in medical care organization at the University of Michigan in and is currently a professor in the department of risk, insurance, and healthcare management at Temple University. He is the author of numerous articles and five books on the organization of health services including, Health Care Divided: Race and Healing a Nation (The University of Michigan Press, 1999) and Reinventing Care: Assisted Living in New York City (Vanderbilt University Press, 2003). He received a 1995 Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Research Investigator Award for research on the history and legacy of the racial segregation of health care and continues to write and do research on this topic.
