The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s latest report on potentially preventable hospitalizations revealed that vaccine-preventable conditions such as measles, mumps, and rubella accounted for 8 percent of these admissions. Reporting on 22 acute and chronic conditions, the study also showed substantial disparities in the prevalence of hospitalizations for vaccine-preventable conditions across geographic areas and Primary Healthcare Networks. Overall, 9 percent of hospital bed days were deemed potentially avoidable with appropriate preventive care and early disease management.
